In a 2013 presentation at a meeting in Washington, DC, I reviewed research on major approaches to science communication and public engagement, analyzing main assumptions, goals, limits, and trade-offs.
My presentation was part of a workshop at the National Academies of Sciences (NAS) on “Trust and Confidence at the Interfaces of the Life Sciences and Society: Does the Public Trust Science?” — organized by the Roundtable Committee on Public Interfaces of the Life Sciences (on which I served as a member).
The NAS published a summary report on the presentations and panels at the meeting, which remains a highly relevant resource for thinking critically about contemporary research and approaches to public communication and engagement:
